Diabetic Food website

Vegetarians Many people are choosing to follow a vegetarian diet these days. People who follow a vegetarian diet do not eat any meat (meaning no red meat, poultry, seafood, or products made with these foods).

This diet is a healthy option to consider, but it should be well-planned. If you choose to follow a vegetarian diet, be sure to eat a mix of vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, and low-fat dairy products (if you choose to include dairy).

There are many different types of vegetarian diets. The most common types are:

  • Vegan — This group does not eat meat, eggs, or dairy products.
  • Lacto-vegetarian — This group does not eat meat or eggs. However, they will eat dairy products.
  • Lacto-ovo vegetarian — This group does not eat any meat. However, they will eat both dairy products and eggs.

Is it Safe for Someone With Diabetes to Follow a Vegetarian Diet?

Yes! A vegetarian diet is a healthy option, even if you have diabetes. Research supports that following this type of diet can help prevent and manage diabetes. In fact, research on vegan diets has found that carbohydrate and calorie restrictions were not necessary and still promoted weight loss and lowered participants' A1C.

Vegan diets are naturally higher in fiber, much lower in saturated fat, and cholesterol-free when compared to a traditional American diet. The high fiber in this diet may help you feel full for a longer time after eating and may help you eat less over all. When fiber intake is greater than 50 grams per day on a vegan diet, it may help lower blood glucose levels.

This diet also tends to cost less. Meat, poultry, and fish are usually the most expensive foods we eat.

The Vegan Diet

This is also called the total or pure vegetarian diet. Those who follow a vegan diet do not eat any meat or foods made with meat products.

People with diabetes can choose to follow this type of vegetarian diet too. The vegan diet includes a variety of plant-based foods. Eating soy products and a mix of vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains provides plenty of protein and other important nutrients. The main nutrient of concern for this group is vitamin B12, so taking a supplement or multi-vitamin is usually necessary.

Be sure to check out the Key Nutrients page to learn more about vitamin B12.

Diabetic cat questions

My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes (along with several other issues we have bee dealing with for several years)and I am about to start changing his diet.
Is there a creditable website I can go to look up information?
Is there anyone here with a diabetic cat that cooks their food for them? He can't have raw meat due to his other issues, but I have no problem cooking.
Everything I read says don't feed dry food, but that is what the vet is offering me. Anyone have any other advice?

Southbeach and Diabetic diets are basically the

Same thing.
South Beach has fewer carbs than the ADA recommended diabetic diet, but the ADA recommendations are stupid. The ADA website has a "Diabetic Friendly" muffin recipe that had 45 grams of carbs....PER MUFFIN!!!
ADA also says that it's fine for diabetics to chow down on sugar and fast carbs.
If you visit diabetic forums and check what types of food most diabetics are eating (the ones that are successfully controlling their glucose) almost all of them eat basically the south beach diet.

I'm wanting to bake some cookies for my grandfather who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Cookies are one of his favorite sweets but unfortunately he's a diabetic so I have to make sure they're sugar free.

I'm having a hard time finding recipes for sugar free cookies. Does anyone know of a website that has sugar free recipes? Or do you have a recipe that you'd mind sharing?

Thank you so much for you help!

I had gastric bypass surgery.I am able to eat sugary foods now but I have no problem eating diet items.I am hoping someone knows where I can find a lower calorie recipe? It doesnt have to be sugar free. I usually alter diabetic recipes.I havent found one that either had good feedback or sounded good.I saw one with splenda but even with those subs it comes up to almost 500 calories apiece.anyone?

    • LOW CALORIE PECAN PIE

One box low fat vanilla pudding One cup white corn syrup Three quarter cup canned milk One half cup chopped pecans Unbaked piecrust

Mix the pudding, corn syrup, and milk in a bowl. Pour into the unbaked piecrust and sprinkle nuts on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

While this recipe does have some calories, it is less than your standard pecan pie. Therefore, cut small pieces, skip the ice cream, and enjoy!
