Stay Away from These Foods to Keep Your Blood Sugar in Check

Certain foods can send your blood sugar level on a roller coaster, with insulin rushing to keep up. The good news is, while there are some surprises, most of these foods fall under the same category: processed food, such as white flour and sugar. "Refined flours and sugar cause huge spikes in insulin and get absorbed quickly, which causes problems, " says Mark Hyman, author of The Blood Sugar Solution (Little, Brown and Company). Look at the whole meal instead of just individual ingredients, adds Jackie Mills, MS, RD. Pairing carbohydrates with protein, fat, or fiber helps slow down the absorption process. I want to post a list for myself of the worst foods to eat for me. THanks.

    • Well in a way you can say there are no "bad" foods for a diabetic. The reason being is because it isn't just about the type of food, but also about MODERATION and balance. For example, a snickers bar, big bowl of pasta, or ice cream would not be a good idea if you indulged. BUT if you …ke pasta with a cream sauce, aren't great for a diabetic because they slow down the absorption in your system causing a longer impact on your glucose levels. But if you are like me and go for a bike ride, I need that long acting energy during my activity so I have some starchy foods before I go.

    • There are A LOT of other diabetes medications. Look on to see the long long list of medications. You need to work with an endocrinologist not just your family doctor at this point. An endocrinologist has more information on all the types of diabetes medications and how they interact with each other.
